In today's article, I will define what a positive mindset or positive self-talk is, the different characteristics of a positive attitude, and a few tips on having a positive mindset.

You know I like to start our blogs by defining essential terms. First, I would like to explain what a positive attitude is and what positive psychology is.

These terms are both significant in understanding what a positive mindset is all about.


According to Remez Sasson;

Positive attitude is a state of mind that envisions and expects favorable results. It is an attitude that helps you see the good in people. A positive attitude is a mindset that helps you see and recognize opportunities.

Now according to Kendra Cherry at Very Well Mind,

Positive psychology focuses more on what makes already-functional people thrive even more, rather than on fixing a problem that may be causing difficulties in someone’s life.

From these definitions, we can come up with a good description of a positive mindset;

A #PositiveMindset is a state of mind that focuses on the bright side, anticipates positive results, and deals with challenges in business, or life in general, with a positive outlook.

A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, and it sparks extraordinary results.


As business-minded people, we need a mindset that will help us become:

  • more resilient
  • more thankful

  • more responsible

A positive mindset is essential in our day-to-day business operation. It can help bring better results. A positive mindset can make our employees happier and extremely satisfied.

Generally, having a positive mindset can help propel us to greater heights in our chosen industry, and give us a better quality of life.

With the said, it's time to talk about the different characteristics of a positive attitude.

Here are a few traits and characteristics associated with a positive mindset:

1. Optimism

Optimism is about your willingness to make an effort and take a chance on your business instead of assuming your efforts won’t yield any rewards in the end.


Here are a few benefits of being optimistic:


  • Superior health
  • Greater achievement
  • Persistence
  • Better emotional health
  • Increased life longevity

2. Resilience

Resilience is about getting back on your feet after facing serious difficulty, disappointment, and failure instead of quitting altogether.

3. Gratitude

Gratitude is about actively, continuously appreciating the great things happening in your business or life in general.


Here are a few tips to increase your feelings of gratitude:


  • Make gentle reminders.
  • Don't compare yourself with others.
  • Keep a gratitude journal.

4. Self-awareness

Self-awareness is about continuously focusing your mind, so you are aware of your feelings, motives, and desires.

5. Responsibility

Responsibility is about being 100% accountable for all your actions and knowing that no one else can control your fate but you.

Now that we know the definition and its characteristics let me list a few useful tips on having and keeping a positive mindset.

Here we go!

1. Use Affirmations

"I am awesome!"

Tell yourself this every day, and your mindset will always be positive.

Positive affirmations are phrases which you repeat to yourself, which describe how you want to be.

Here are a few more examples:


  • "I am confident!"
  • "I can do it!"
  • "I will succeed!"
  • "I will win!"
  • "I am happy!"

Using positive self-talk gives you control of your mind and the information it receives. It lets you flood your mind with all things positive, which will change your life for the better!

How can you feel positive if all you think about is the negative? You can't. That's why positive self-talk and affirmations can help.

2. Focus on the Positive In Everything

Speaking of affirmations, keeping a positive mind means always focusing on positivity.

The number one enemy of positivity is negative thoughts. If you let them creep in, then you are already losing.

In business, focus on positive things that are happening and don't dwell on the negative.

You can always find something positive to take away from every day.

For example, I had a horrible day yesterday. One thing after another went wrong, but I had some great conversations with a few potential new clients that allowed me to put a positive spin on the day.

3. Don't Take Life Too Seriously

In business or life in general, we must take it seriously but not too much!

Why? Because when we take life too seriously we:


  • Scare people away.
  • Cause ourselves unnecessary suffering.
  • Create significant stress in our lives.

But how do we not take life too seriously? Here are a few tips:


  • Break from habit occasionally.
  • Learn techniques to cope with stress.
  • Express yourself through movement.
  • Incorporate music into your life.
  • Seek out opportunities to laugh.
  • Make jokes to combat minor frustrations.
  • Surround yourself with fun, supportive folks.
  • Meditate.

4. Laugh Each Day

Speaking of not taking life too seriously, having a positive mindset is also about laughing when there’s a reason to laugh.

I want to make this section a little light. Here are a few ways to laugh more every single day:


  • Ask a preschooler to explain something.
  • Let a funny autocorrect fail ride.
  • Read a few memes.
  • Spend time with your pets.
  • Hangout with people that make you smile.

You get the idea. Find the things in life that make you laugh and incorporate them into each day.

So, what makes you laugh?

5. Learn From Setbacks, Then Move On

It sounds like a broken record, but everyone makes mistakes.

To have a positive mind, one must learn from their mistakes and then move on.

Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Instead, learn from them and keep moving forward.

Here are some steps on how to learn from your mistakes:


  • Step 1: Recognize your mistakes.
  • Step 2: Ask yourself questions like:

    What did go wrong?
    What could I do better next time?
    What did I learn from my mistake?
  • Step 3: Create a plan to prevent the mistake in the future.
  • Step 4: Create a list of reasons why you don’t want to make the same mistake again.
  • Step 5: It's time to move forward.

6. Increase Self-awareness

Self-awareness is critical in achieving a positive mindset.

Self-awareness is about acknowledging what makes one’s identity unique. These unique components include thoughts, abilities, and experiences.

Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence or EQ.

The ability to monitor our emotions and thoughts regularly lets us:


  • Understand ourselves better.
  • Be at peace with who we are.
  • Proactively manage our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Here are a few ways to develop self-awareness:


  • Save some personal space.
  • Practice mindfulness.
  • Keep a journal.
  • Practice being a good listener.
  • Ask for feedback.

7. Stay in the Present

Being and staying in the present has been a struggle for many entrepreneurs over the years. I have a hard time with this too.

I know how difficult it is to stay in the present while managing a business.

Over the years, I have developed an attitude to help me stay in the present and to keep a positive mindset.

Here's how:


  • Be aware of your present thoughts.
  • Be aware of what the five senses need.
    What do you hear? Taste? Feel? See? Smell?
  • Step outside yourself and stop overthinking.
  • Write all your present thoughts down.
  • Create a reminder to help you stay in the present.

8. Surround Yourself With Positive People

Positive people are happy people.

If you want to develop a positive mind, then you have to surround yourself with like-minded people.

It's easy to spot positive-minded people. Here are some common traits to look for:


  • They are compassionate and empathic toward others.
  • They have the ambition and courage to follow their dreams and goals.
  • They have coping mechanisms to deal with sadness, anger, and frustration.
  • They can look at a situation and realize that it’s one moment in time and not an entire lifetime.
  • They value self-care as essential and not selfish.

Now let's look at how to surround yourself with positive-minded people:


  • Always be yourself.
  • Find common ground.
  • Go out of your comfort zone.
  • Create a positive outlook for yourself.
  • Share happiness and positivity with others for no reason.

9. Practice Gratitude

In everything you do, be grateful and stop complaining.

Being grateful is a powerful element in keeping a positive mind. Without it, the word "positivity" won't exist.

Positivity is about being thankful to anyone every chance you get!

  • Say aloud three good things that happened every day.
  • Keep a gratitude journal.
  • Say thanks to your business partners and employees.
  • Calm a hot temper with a quick gratitude inventory.

10. Recognize Your Successes

Charles Bukowski once said,

Some moments are nice, some are nicer, some are even worth writing about.

This quote is true when talking about success in business or life, but I'd like to add that even little achievements are worth writing about.

I am notoriously bad at recognizing my successes, especially the seemingly small, insignificant ones. The truth is, all your successes are significant, so take the time to acknowledge them.

If you recognize all your successes, both big and small, then you will have a positive mindset.
