Stop Lighting Marketing Dollars On Fire: The Costly Mistakes B2B Companies Make (And How to Avoid Them)
Have you ever looked at your marketing spend and thought, where the heck did that money go? If so, you are not alone. If your marketing feels like you're throwing cash into a bonfire, you're not broken, you're not behind. You're just missing the engine that makes everything work. In today's episode, I'm going to unpack the most common and expensive marketing mistakes B2B businesses make. You're going to learn how to spot and stop these missteps before they burn your budget. And I will show you how to align your efforts with the three core components of a high-performing marketing engine: strategy, planning, and leadership.
Hi, I am Tim Fitzpatrick with Rialto Marketing, where we believe marketing shouldn't be difficult, and it definitely shouldn't be guesswork. Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in. I'm excited to jump into this. I've got five costly mistakes for you. I'm not going to waste any time. Let's just jump right into it.
Tactics Before Strategy
Here's number one, tactics before strategy. Tactics before strategy. This happens all the time. This is a classic mistake people jump right into doing. They buy ads, they hire an SEO firm, they redo their website, they start cranking out content. The problem here is simple. All that activity sits on top of a week or a missing strategy. When you do tactics without strategy, you get motion, but there's no momentum. You get busy without the results. What you're doing here really is you're building an engine, but you have no fuel for it. Strategy is the fuel for the engine. Without it, all these tactics that you use to assemble your engine are not going to work. The common symptoms I see here is you don't know exactly who your best clients are. Your messaging is too broad. It doesn't resonate. It's changing all the time. What you're offering is unclear to your market. These are common symptoms of businesses that have skipped strategy. The fix here is to slow down. Clarify who your ideal clients are. Once you understand who your ideal clients are, then and only then can you craft a message to attract and engage those people. And position you as the logical choice for those ideal clients. You've got to get that stuff done before you spend another dollar on marketing that has no fuel. So that's the first mistake, tactics before strategy.
STOP OVER-COMPLICATING MARKETING AND ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS TODAY!
We'll show you how to create a simple, effective marketing plan in minutes!
This is the exact same marketing plan we use for our business and our clients.
It's simple and easy to use. Isn't it time you started seeing consistent, repetable results with your marketing? It all starts with the RIGHT plan...
Broad Targeting and Random Tactics
Second, broad targeting and random tactics. Technically, these are two, but they cross over a bit. So broad targeting and random tactics. What am I talking about here? Like I said, they're two separate, but they show up together all the time. First issue is just talking to everyone, right? You're targeting very broadly, but everyone is not your customer, okay? When you're trying to target everyone as your customer, what ends up happening is no one is a great fit to become a customer. The second issue, random tactics, is just jumping from one tactic to the next. Little email here, little SEO there, maybe I'm doing a webinar, maybe we do a podcast, I'm doing LinkedIn ads, right? It's just one thing to the next. The real reason this happens, oftentimes a few different things, right? Fear of missing out, feeling like you have to do everything. It's also impatience. I'm trying this. It's not working. I'm jumping to something else. What creates this is just scattered marketing, when you don't have an actual plan, when you don't have clarity on what you need to do, it's very easy to just jump from one thing to the next. When you target broadly You confuse prospects because they don't know if they're actually a right fit for you. Your team gets frustrated because they just don't know exactly what they should be doing. And your budget just evaporates. Targeting broadly is incredibly expensive and ineffective. Random tactics just burn budget because you jump from one thing to the next and nothing works. The fix here is the focus. Narrow down, hone in on who your ideal clients are. Everyone with a heartbeat is not an ideal client. Pick one to three core tactics that match your stage of growth, match your ideal clients, and stick with them long enough to measure what is actually happening. What's working, what's not. You do not need to be everywhere, but The vast majority of businesses need one to three strong tactics, and their business would change dramatically. You don't need to leverage every marketing tactic, every marketing channel that's out there. Once you narrow that down and you pick those one to three tactics, you have clarity on what you need to do, you're going to be in much better shape. Having that plan, you know what sets of parts you're going to use to build your engine. Instead of trying to piece together these random parts to make an engine, you know exactly which parts you need to build the right engine for you. That's number two, broad targeting and random tactics.
Weak or Inconsistent Messaging
Number three, weak or inconsistent messaging. Weak or inconsistent messaging. If your message changes from your website to your emails, to your sales calls, prospects feel confused. They're not seeing a consistent message from one place to the next. This confuses buyers and Confused people do not buy. They put their guard up, right? They hesitate. They ghost you, right? They move on to something else. People have such short attention spans at this point. If they don't understand what you do, if it's not clear, if it's not resonating with them, they are moving on. Some of the symptoms of this, website copy feels very generic. Take your logo off, take a competitor's logo off, and they both say the same damn thing. Sales teams are struggling to explain what makes you different. Why should somebody choose you? Leads trickle in but rarely convert. These are all signs of just some messaging issues. Messaging is one of the core pillars in strategy. Within strategy, when When we look at that strategic component of building a marketing engine, you have your target market and your ideal clients. You have messaging, and then you have your services and your offers. Messaging is incredibly important. When messaging is weak, everything downstream of that is going to suffer. When your messaging is weak, all the tactics you choose to leverage are going to be weak as a result of that. So the fix is you have to build a clear messaging playbook. What are you going to say? How are you going to say it? Why are you saying it? You need to understand why you're doing this. Align that messaging playbook with all of your marketing channels. And not just your marketing, you need to align it with your sales team and your customer service team so that your message is consistent as prospects become customers, and they work through their journey in working with you. You want to make sure your content and conversations all tell the same story. Weak or inconsistent messaging, number three.
No Leadership or Accountability
Now, let's jump to number four. No leadership or accountability. No leadership or accountability. This one hits home for a lot of B2B business owners. Marketing is being, quote, unquote, handled, but nobody's actually leading it. If you're the business owner, you're probably trying to lead it. But when marketing is not your strong suit, it's really hard. It is hard to manage something that you don't really understand well. And that's not a knock on you. None of us understand everything well. We need to get support. So if you're trying to lead your marketing efforts, but you don't understand it, that is really, really hard to do successfully. Maybe you have a junior person, a Marketing Manager or a coordinator that's doing tasks, or maybe you have an agency that's executing for you. Maybe you're the default point person, but without that leadership level, the engine is just going to sit there. There's no direction, there's no consistency, there's no progress. There's nobody keeping everyone moving in the same direction, and on the same page. The fix here is someone has to own marketing, and a Marketing Manager or coordinator is not a marketing leader. I want to make that clear. It can be internal leadership or it can be external. But you got to make sure that it is a leadership-level person. That means an outsourced or part-time chief marketing officer, or it means a full-time chief marketing officer. To preface that, you got to make sure that it makes a lot of sense for you to hire full-time. I've seen people that hire full-time, and they do not need full-time. And a full-time real CMO is an expensive hire. This could be a marketing advisor or consultant that can help lead those efforts. But just someone who knows how to maintain and optimize the engine, someone who can play that mechanic role. Make sure the engine is running efficiently, it's being optimized, everything's working like it should. Again, strategy is the fuel. Planning is the parts and assembling the engine. Leadership is the mechanic that keeps everything running. You have to have a marketing leader. And if you don't, your marketing is going to suffer because of it.
Investing in Tactics You Aren't Ready For
Last, certainly not least, investing in tactics you aren't ready for. Let me say that one more time. Investing in tactics you aren't ready for. What the heck does that mean, Tim? Let me give you an example. This is where money gets burned fast. Here's a simple example. Paying for SEO or generative engine optimization with the advent of AI when your messaging is weak or not where it needs to be. So you're trying to drive traffic to a website that has poor messaging. You're not ready for that tactic because all you're doing is driving traffic to a site that's not going to convert. Running ads before you really have clarity on your ideal client. In other words, you're just going to target broadly. That's a waste of freaking time and money. Hiring an agency before you actually have a plan. That's a waste of time because you're going to approach an agency, you're not ready for an agency because what most people do, and this is a big mistake, is they go to an agency and say, Hey, we need to start doing marketing. We need a plan. Well, you know what? Agencies have a dog in the fight. They make money off of the services they sell. So what do you expect them to put in your plan? They're going to put everything that they sell in your plan and tell you that's what you need to do. You need to approach an agency with your plan and tell them, We need help with X or Y. Can you help us with that? Don't expect them to drive your plan. I think that is a huge mistake. People will argue with me on that all the time, but I see it happen over and over and over again. You need to have your plan. You need to know what you need. Then you can approach an agency to have them help you do the implementation work. These are all examples of investing in tactics that you aren't ready for. Any of the tactics can work, but only when your engine is ready for it.
Conclusion
How do you fix this? Use a simple readiness checklist. Make sure that strategy and planning are solid before you start jumping into action and investing in anything new. The tactics you invest in have to fit your plan, and someone must own the execution on it.
Those are the five big ones that I see that are costing B2B companies all kinds of money. I've shared you some ways to help you avoid them, so hopefully you found this helpful. Look, none of this is the end of the world. Every B2B owner I talk to has hit some version of these mistakes. I have hit versions of these mistakes. How do you think I know about them? I have made them. It happens to the best of us. The real wins come from stepping out of the marketing maze that so many of us find ourselves in. We're stuck in this maze, not sure what to do. Step out of the maze, take the time to build an engine that gives you clarity, confidence, and control in what you're doing from a marketing standpoint. When you line up strategy, planning, and leadership, Things finally start to click. Focus on the fundamentals. The fundamentals of any discipline, including marketing, do not change. Keep it simple. Steer clear of the junk that sets your budget on fire. You do that and you'll keep moving down the road without second-guessing every decision. So I hope you found this helpful. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch, to listen. Again, I am Tim Fitzpatrick with Rialto Marketing.
