So today, I want to share something that I think about a lot and believe is at the core of why marketing works for some businesses, but not others. I call them the 10 Marketing Commandments. Now, before you roll your eyes at the word Commandments, stick with me here. These aren't rules someone handed down from a marketing conference. These are beliefs. They are principles. Things that if you actually internalize them will completely change how you think about marketing your business. They're different from what most marketers push. Actually, they go against what a lot of the industry promotes, which is probably why most marketing doesn't work.

The 10 Rules I Wish Every Business Owner Knew Before Spending a Dollar on Marketing

Hi, I am Tim Fitzpatrick with Rialto Marketing, where we believe marketing shouldn't be difficult, and it definitely shouldn't be guesswork. I want to thank you so much for taking the time to tune in today.

Let's just get right get into it, okay? I've grouped these into four different buckets because 10 is a lot all at once. And honestly, some of them are really closely related. So I'm going to share each of them in these four buckets.

Get Your Thinking Right

The first bucket I'm calling get your thinking right. Get your thinking right. So the first three Commandments all come back to the same root issue. Most business owners make marketing way harder than it needs to be.

So the first commandment is keep it simple. Complexity does not equal sophistication. I see this all the time. Business is trying to be everywhere, run every channel, chase every tactic. And what happens? Nothing actually works because nothing gets enough focus. Simplicity is a competitive advantage. Fewer things done well beats 10 things done halfway. Okay. One of my mentor said, complexity is the enemy of results, and that always stuck with me. So it is very easy to overcomplicate marketing. We need to bring it back to simplicity. Keep it simple. That's the First commandment.

Second one is strategy before tactics, always. Strategy before tactics, always. This one is non-negotiable for me, okay? If you think about building a car, you wouldn't just grab random parts and start bolting things together. You'd start with the plan. Marketing is the same thing. The way I actually think about strategy is a fuel for the engine. The tactics are the parts that you're assembling. So a lot of business owners are jumping right into tactics. They're assembling the engine and they're wondering why it's not working. It's because you have no fuel for the engine. Most businesses skip strategy and jump right in tactics. But without strategy, tactics, they're just noise. You've got an engine with no fuel. Okay? Strategy before tactics, always.

Third commandment, obsess over the things that do not change. The principles of marketing, knowing your ideal clients, having a clear marketing message, making sure that your services and your offers are in alignment with what that market wants to buy. These things are timeless. They do not change. The fundamentals of hitting a Major League fastball are the same fundamentals required to hit a baseball when you were growing up. The fundamentals are the same. They don't change. The businesses I've seen grow consistently are the ones that master the fundamentals, not the ones constantly chasing the next shiny object. So make sure that you obsess over the things that do not change. Get those down. That's the foundation that the rest of your marketing house can be built on.

STOP OVER-COMPLICATING MARKETING AND ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS TODAY!

We'll show you how to create a simple, effective marketing plan in minutes!

This is the exact same marketing plan we use for our business  and our clients.

It's simple and easy to use. Isn't it time you started seeing consistent, repetable results with your marketing? It all starts with the RIGHT plan...

The Hard Truth About Results

Now, let's talk about the hard truth about results. Here's your next group of Commandments. The hard truth about results. Here, I want to talk about expectations because a lot of frustration in marketing comes from expecting the wrong things or having unrealistic expectations.

The next commandment is marketing is an investment. Marketing is an investment. It's not an expense. It's not a vending machine that you just pull stuff out of. You don't put it in a dollar and get three back by Friday. It takes time. And it takes time to compound. Businesses that treat it like a long-term investment, build the engine, be consistent. Measure what matters. Those are the businesses that eventually hit their stride. The ones that don't think of it as an expense, when times get tough, they think they can cut it. They think short term. But the ones that bail after 90 days because they didn't see results, usually just ran out of patience before they gave it the opportunity that it needed to work. So marketing is an investment.

Next commandment. There is no one-size-fits-all marketing plan. I cannot stress this enough. What works for your buddy's MSP in Ohio might be completely wrong for your cybersecurity firm in Atlanta. Even if we're talking about MSPs, I can take two MSPs that are doing the same top line that both want to grow. Their plans are not the same because your businesses are different. The market you're targeting, your message, your ideal clients, your growth stage, your budget, the things that really resonate with you as an owner, all of those things matter. Copying someone else's marketing plan is like wearing somebody else's prescription glasses. It's not going to work very well, which is why you can't just take some template or framework that somebody else said worked and apply it to your business and expect it to do the same thing. It might look right, but it's going to give you a headache. It's not going to work. You need a plan built for your business.

Now, last marketing commandment in this group of the hard truth about results is that most marketing doesn't work at first. Let me let that sink in for just a little bit. Most marketing doesn't work at first. And this is the one that nobody wants to say out loud. It's true. Marketing is a process of testing, measuring, and learning. The first version of your message probably isn't going to be perfect, and that's fine. That doesn't mean the marketing is broken. It means you haven't dialed it in yet. The businesses that win are the ones that stay in it long enough to figure out what works, then go all in on that. But marketing is a constant process of testing, measuring, and learning.

Stop Waiting for Something to Save You

Now, third group is stop wasting. We say, Stop waiting for something to save you. Stop waiting for something to save you. This segment is where I'll probably step on some toes, but it needs to be said. So I'm just going to say it.

Next marketing commandment, there is no marketing easy button. Every year, there's a new thing that's supposed to solve everything. A new platform, a new automation tool, AI. And every year, business owners chase it hoping this is going to be the one thing that's going to make all their marketing work. It never does. It never is. Marketing requires consistent effort, real leadership, and someone who cares enough to actually own it. There are no shortcuts. I know as humans, we're wired for short term gratification and looking for shortcuts, but they aren't there. You got to do the work. The sooner you can accept that, the sooner you start building a marketing engine that's going to work. There is no marketing easy button.

Next one is hope is not a marketing strategy. And yet so many business owners are basically hoping lead show up. They're throwing stuff up against a wall, hoping something is going to stick. Let's do this tactic and this tactic and this one, and let's just hope that it's going to make the phone ring. Hope a referral comes through the door. Hope is not a marketing strategy. Clarity and taking the time to build a plan, put a strategy in place. That's what's going to work. Knowing who you're targeting, what you're saying, and where you're going to show up, and why you're going to show up there. That's a strategy. That is starting to put a plan together. Hope might get you through the short term. It will not build a growing business. It will not yield consistent, predictable growth.

Next commandment is AI won't fix a broken marketing engine. AI is an awesome tool. I use it. Most of you that are watching and listening to this, use it. I love it. But here's the deal. If your marketing strategy is wrong, if your message is off, if you don't know who your ideal client is, AI is not going to fix that. AI just helps you produce more of the wrong stuff faster. It amplifies what you've got, whether it's good or it's bad. So if what you've got is broken, AI is just making that more efficient. And that's not a good thing, right? Fix the foundation first, then use AI to accelerate and enable What you're doing.

The Way It Should Be Done

Now, last group, there's one in here. This I'm calling the way it should be done, the way it should be done. But what's the last marketing commandment? I saved this one for last because I think it's one of the most important ones, and it's one that I'm personally passionate about, which is effective marketing doesn't require manipulation. So many of us see this. We see this every day. Marketing that's really praying off of fear and fear mongering people. The industry has convinced a lot of people that you need to create fake urgency and pressure tactics and psychological tricks to get people to buy. And some marketers have made a lot of money selling that approach. Frankly, I could probably make a hell of a lot more money selling that approach, but it doesn't feel good to me. So I don't do it. But here's what I know from my experience, you can build a thriving business by being genuinely helpful, completely transparent, and honest about what you do and don't do. You don't need gimmicks. You don't need to manufacture scarcity. And there's nothing wrong with scarcity or urgency, but you just need to make sure that it's not fake, that you're not just saying it because you think you need it. Okay? You don't need to make people feel bad about their situation to get them to act. The best clients I've ever worked with and the best clients my clients have ever landed came through trust, especially in the B2B space, we're buying from people we know, like, and trust. For most of us, this is not just a one-time transaction. If it is a one-time transaction, it is a large one. So you create leads, you bring on potential prospects, you create interested people through real conversations, right? You're demonstrating you actually understand their problem and have a credible path to help them solve it. Good marketing attracts the right people. It doesn't manipulate the wrong ones into buying. And if you do that, if you manipulate people and make them feel bad and pressure them into buying, I can almost guarantee you nine times out of 10, they are not going to be good clients. They're not going to be happy. And when they're not happy, you're not going to be happy. And it's not doing anything to build your business long term.

Conclusion

So there you have it. Those are the 10 Marketing Commandments. I'll run through these one more time really quickly just to make sure you get them all. Here they are. Keep it simple. Strategy before tactics, always. Obsess over the things that do not change. Marketing is an investment. There is no one size fits all marketing plan. Most marketing doesn't work at first. There is no marketing easy button. Hope is not a marketing strategy. AI won't fix broken marketing. And effective marketing doesn't require manipulation.

So here's the big takeaway. These beliefs matter because marketing is not about tactics. It never has. It never has been. Never will be. It's about having the right mindset and the right foundation to build something that actually works. That's it. If you've been frustrated with marketing, there's a good chance that one or more of these commands is where the gap is. And that's actually good news because that means it's fixable.

About the author, Tim Fitzpatrick

You're a growth-minded MSP or B2B tech company owner who's great at what you do, and your clients get real results. But customer acquisition remains your biggest challenge. You're stuck in what we call The Marketing Maze: a frustrating cycle of disconnected tactics, wasted spend, and false starts. You've hired agencies, run ads, done everything you're supposed to do, and none of it has reliably solved the problem. The worst part isn't the wasted money. It's the doubt. You start wondering if you're the problem. You're not.

We believe being great at what you do should be enough to grow a business. It's not right that it isn't. Excellence deserves to win, and with the right system, it can. At Rialto Marketing, we come at growth differently. Tim Fitzpatrick built and scaled a distribution company 60% year over year before selling it. He sees growth through a revenue lens first and a marketing lens second, because he's lived what it takes to grow a business, not just studied it.

We've built a proven system called the Supercharged Marketing Engine, and we install it using a simple three-step framework: Strategy fuels the engine with clear positioning and direction. Planning builds the engine with a focused execution roadmap. Leadership keeps the engine running with metrics, implementation/execution, and optimization that produce predictable results.

Without the right system, the problems only compound. Inconsistent customer acquisition, unpredictable revenue, wasted spend, and growing doubt with every passing month. But when you install the right engine, everything shifts. Your pipeline becomes predictable. Your revenue becomes consistent. And you become the thriving owner with clarity, momentum, and a growth system working in the background, and you're free to lead your business from the front instead of chasing tactics from behind.

The only growth system for MSPs and B2B tech companies that turns client acquisition from your biggest challenge into your biggest advantage. Ready to see how it works? Let's talk.
