The Hidden Cost of DIY Marketing
I hear this all the time from business owners. Hey, maybe we should try to figure marketing out ourselves. Today, I want to unpack why this instinct makes sense, but also why it can hold your business back and what a smarter approach looks like.
Hi, I am Tim Fitzpatrick with Rialto Marketing, where we believe marketing shouldn't be difficult, and it definitely at least shouldn't be guesswork. Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in. Really appreciate you being here.
So this question of, Hey, maybe, or thought, maybe we should try to figure marketing out ourselves first. It happens all the time. Here's my answer. You absolutely can. The question is, how much time and money do you want to spend on trial and error? That's exactly what most of our clients said before working with us. They tried to piece things together, spent months testing, tweaking, and second-guessing. And by the time we connected, they were burnt out and frustrated.
So let me unpack the hidden cost of DIY marketing. Because the instinct to DIY is smart, but it's risky. Most business owners are problem solvers. You've built your companies by figuring things out. Why can't I just figure this marketing thing out? The answer is you can. And the desire to understand marketing is a very good thing. But marketing is complex. Strategy, planning, and leadership, those core components of building a marketing engine all need to work together. And hiring the right person can help you get there faster. That person can also help you understand the fundamentals of marketing that you're going to need if you want to lead your marketing efforts successfully over the long haul. If you think about it, you could build your own car, right? You could work on your engine, fix your engine, too, right? But if you need to get to a meeting across town this week, are you better off hiring a mechanic or spending six months learning how to work on an engine? Trial and error is expensive. The time, opportunity, cost, and frustration often outweigh the savings. So I've touched on this, but what are those real costs of figuring it out yourself.
The Hidden Cost of DIY Marketing
The hidden costs lost time. Chasing the wrong tactics, being stuck in the marketing maze, trying all these different things, going these different directions, trying to get to the end result. But you'll lose a lot of time doing that. You also waste money on tools, ads, tactics, agencies without a clear plan. And then there's missed opportunities. All that time that you're taking to figure things out, you're missing out on opportunities. Meanwhile, you're giving your competitors an opportunity to pull ahead, which we don't want. Nobody wants that. Most B2B owners are, again, stuck in what I call the marketing maze. You're working hard, but without a clear engine, with everything in alignment, you're not driving any result. It's not your fault. Marketing is broken because most advice out there focuses on tactics, not a system, not an engine that's going to yield consistent, more predictable results. But the reality is most business owners are treating the symptoms of their marketing problem, not the root cause. We, I, myself, have already made a bunch of mistakes, tested different approaches, and refined what works. We know exactly what What needs to be done to build a marketing engine that yields consistent repeatable results?
STOP OVER-COMPLICATING MARKETING AND ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS TODAY!
We'll show you how to create a simple, effective marketing plan in minutes!
This is the exact same marketing plan we use for our business and our clients.
It's simple and easy to use. Isn't it time you started seeing consistent, repetable results with your marketing? It all starts with the RIGHT plan...
How The Right Partner Can Help Accelerate Growth
So how can the right partner help accelerate growth, help you get there faster? Let's break it down. Working with the right guide, it doesn't replace ownership. It accelerates learning. Like I said, you can figure this out. All the information you need is out there for pretty much anything, not just marketing. But how much time is it going to take you to figure it out? The right person to support you can help you get there faster, avoid common missteps, problems. They've already been there. They can help you avoid those things and get where you want to go faster. The instinct to understand your marketing is spot on. I absolutely think you should. That's why knowledge transfer should be a really important part of whoever you work with from a marketing standpoint. When we work with clients, we want that knowledge transfer so that they understand what we're doing and why we're doing it. You need to understand the why behind every move, but you don't have to waste months trying to figure it out yourself. When you work with somebody that already knows, they're going to help you get there faster. Now, when we do it, our approach is around a supercharged marketing engine. I touched on this. Strategy, planning, and leadership are the three core components. Strategy is the fuel for the engine. Planning is where you're picking parts. What are the marketing channels and tactics we're going to use? And you take those parts and you start to assemble the engine. Once the engine is assembled, that's when you jump into leadership, and that's your mechanic. You have to have somebody who is keeping that engine running efficiently, but also optimizing it on an ongoing basis. It's simple. That doesn't mean it's easy, but it is simple, which is really, really important. Building an engine does not have to take forever. It does take some time, but you can get quick wins while you're working on building the engine. But building an engine is going to help you get where you want to go faster. It may feel like it's slowing you down in the beginning, but it's actually you're taking time to slow down and put the right things in place so that you can go faster later.
How to Decide When to DIY Versus When to Get Help
So how do you decide when to DIY versus when to get help? What I would recommend you do is ask three self-assessment questions. One, Do you have a clear strategy for growth? Do you know what you are doing there? Do you have that in place? Because without the strategy, there is no fuel for the engine. It is not going to work. The second question, do you have the time and bandwidth to execute consistently? And then three is, do you have the expertise to know what's working and what's not? If the answer is no to any of these, you need to get help. Because all three of these things are really important. I'm going to caution you that if you don't have the time and bandwidth to execute consistently, the person that you are working with for leadership expertise and strategic expertise should be different than the person you get time and bandwidth help from to execute. Strategy and tactics take very different skill sets. There's a lot of agencies out there that you think it's an easy button. I can just go to one place and get it all done. It never works out that way. Strategy and execution, the tactics are totally different skill sets. That strategic and that leadership level person need to be separate from the person that's implementing. But if the answer is no to any If you're going to need help, then you need help. Doing it yourself might feel cheaper, but not growing for another year or two years is way more expensive than that. You can still learn as you go, but you don't have to do it alone. That's the really important part here.
Conclusion
So I hope you have found this helpful. There are a lot of hidden costs to DIY marketing that most business owners just overlook. You could absolutely, like I've said, figure this out yourself, but you don't have to reinvent the wheel. The faster you get clarity and the right system or marketing engine in place, the faster your business is going to grow. Don't spend another six months guessing or 12 months guessing and stuck in the marketing maze. There's always a way forward. You just need the right roadmap, the right support, the right guidance to to get you where you want to go faster. So I hope you found this helpful. Again, I am Tim Fitzpatrick with Rialto Marketing.
